Venerato is a village of the Heraclion municipality, 20 kilometers from the Heraclion city.
Administratively the district is consisted of Venerato, the Paliani Monastery, Pirgos and Sinapi. 962 people live in the whole district and 917 live only in Venerato.
Their main occupation is agriculture. Municipal services, banks and a clinic are in the settlement.
The Paliani Monastery is near the settlement and the Venerato gorge is between the settlement and the monastery.
HISTORY
During the Venetian Occupation, Venerato was a resort of the lords of Venice and the largest settlement of the area.
PLACE NAME
The name possibly comes from the Italian word “venerato” that means respected. It is said that the name was referred firstly to the Paliani monastery and then to the village.
