At the top of a small hill, just 27 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, lies the beautiful village of Smari, another hidden gem of Crete. It’s no coincidence that the village has been recognized as a tourism destination of excellence within the framework of the European EDEN program, and is included among the 15 most beautiful villages on the island.
Smari combines natural beauty with rich cultural and historical heritage. Archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, and traditional houses create a unique setting that captivates visitors. As one strolls through the picturesque alleys with stone-built houses adorned with colorful flowers, the view of the harmonious blend of olive groves, vineyards, and aromatic plants is sure to enchant.
With about 385 inhabitants, most of whom are involved in agriculture and livestock farming, Smari offers an authentic rural life experience. Local festivals and traditional celebrations, such as the one honoring Prophet Elijah every July, are a significant part of the village's cultural life.
On top of Prophet Elijah’s hill near the settlement, you will find the ruins of the ancient Acropolis, where significant archaeological finds such as sanctuaries, megarons, vessels, and jewelry have been uncovered. Even for those less interested in archaeology, the panoramic view from the hill, stretching out to the island of Dia, is spectacular.
The village's churches are also key attractions. The Church of the Virgin Mary, built in 1836, the Monastery of Prophet Elijah from the Turkish occupation era, and the chapel of St. George with its 14th-century frescoes are just a few of the historical religious monuments one can visit.
Smari is a destination that combines nature, history, and culture, offering visitors an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Cretan countryside.
