The village of Krasi, located just 47 km from Heraklion, is a picturesque and historic destination situated on the northwestern slopes of Mount Selena at an altitude of around 600 meters. In the central square, the ancient plane tree, estimated to be 1,800-2,000 years old and measuring over 14 meters in diameter, impresses visitors with its massive branches, offering refreshing shade in the summer. The square also hosts the village’s two arched fountains, the “Upper” and “Lower” fountains, which draw cool, fresh water from the surrounding mountains.

Visitors can explore the village's well-preserved, traditional stone alleyways, which retain an authentic Cretan style. To the northeast lie the Azilakodasos and Chamoprina forests, featuring native maples and oak trees that create a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty. Cultural heritage in the area includes a circular tholos tomb at Armi, highlighting the ancient history of the region.

Krasi is closely connected to Cretan literature, as the famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis often spent summers here with his wife Galatea Alexiou, a native of the village. The plane tree in the square, also known as the “Kazantzakis Plane Tree,” inspired the author, and its shade features in scenes from his book Captain Michalis.

For accommodation, Krasi offers small, welcoming tourism facilities, and visitors can enjoy local flavors and traditional dishes at village tavernas, where authentic Cretan cuisine is served.
