Avgeniki is a village of the Heraclion municipality, on the 20th kilometer of the Heraclion-Timpaki road.
The entrance of the Venerato gorge is near the settlement and it ends up to the Agios Fanourios church, close to Venerato.
Administratively the district is consisted of the Avgeniki and Vlachiana settlements. 800 people live in the whole district and the majority of them in Avgeniki. Their main occupation is agriculture.
HISTORY
Avgeniki is mentioned in the Venetian censuses.
PLACE NAME
The name of the village was given during the era of the Venetian Occupation and can be explained as “Evgeniki” that means the place where nobles lived.
