Sellia

Sellia

Sellia is a village of the Agios Vasileios municipality and the Rethimno prefecture. Its local community is consisted of the settlements of Souda and Plakias. According to the 2011 census 316 people live in Sellia. The village is about 35 kilometers from Rethimno.

The settlement is built on the sides of two hills and that gives it an amazing view to the Libyan Sea. The entrance of the Kotsifos gorge is near the village.

There are taverns and coffeehouses in Sellia.

HISTORY

No Turk has ever lived in the village and the village was known for its revolutionary fights.

CHURCHES

15 churches from the Byzantine Era, such as the Agios Fotis church in the east of the settlement, are in Sellia.

FESTIVITIES

The traditional feasts of the village are the sheep shearing, the grape harvest, the fisherman feast, the traditional cuisine, the raki festival and the tourism festival.
