Aroni is a peaceful village in the municipality of Akrotiri, just 11 km from the city of Chania, on the road to the airport. From a historical perspective, Aroni is recorded in Venetian censuses since 1583 and remains a living part of the local tradition and history. According to tradition, the village was named after a Venetian lord, Aronis, who was the first to settle in the area. In the village square, you will find the Church of the Virgin Mary, a key community landmark. There is also the unique Church of Saint Spyridon, built within catacombs, and the old Church of Saint Nicholas, adding to the religious tradition of the village.

One of the most well-known local stories involves the Church of Saint Nicholas, which is said to have saved the village from Turkish invaders. During a Turkish raid, a bullet struck the bell tower of the church, alerting the villagers to the danger, allowing them to evacuate in time.
