One of the many impressive gorges in the Sfakia region is the Sfakiano Gorge. This scenic and unique gorge starts 2 kilometers east of Chora Sfakion, from the Niato Plateau near the traditional village of Askifou, and stretches down to the coast of the Libyan Sea, ending at the secluded Plakakia beach.

Near the entrance of the gorge, the chapel of Saint Paul, built by the Sfakians in 1407, stands as a monument of faith and history, offering a peaceful spot for reflection and awe. The path through the gorge is set in a striking rocky landscape, surrounded by the wild and imposing natural environment of Sfakia. The steep cliffs, combined with the rich flora of the area, including holm oaks, pines, cypresses, and stone pines, create an unparalleled sense of wild beauty.

Crossing the 6.5-kilometer gorge is considered easy and accessible for everyone, with the total traversal time estimated at around 3 hours. This route, in addition to its stunning natural beauty, offers hikers an interesting geological experience while providing an opportunity to discover the traditional history of the area.

Near the exit of the gorge, in Porolakko, there is access to the road leading to Chora Sfakion. For the more adventurous, continuing further will bring you close to the beautiful beach of Filaki, one of the most secluded and serene beaches in the area.
