Trafoulas Beach is a secluded and impressive beach, offering visitors a unique natural experience. To reach it, one must hike through the Trafoulas Gorge, a short yet exciting route that takes around 30 minutes. The gorge begins at the Loutra area and leads directly to the beach, creating an unforgettable hiking experience among imposing rocks shaped like sculptures. Many visitors report that the landscape feels as if you’ve stepped onto another planet.
Trafoulas Beach is located approximately 75 kilometers south of Heraklion, and it is around 4 kilometers from Lentas. Access is possible either by hiking through the gorge, which takes about 1.5 hours, or by boat from Lentas. The hike is relatively easy for those with average physical fitness and passes through a scenic natural corridor with rocks and formations.
The beach consists of fine sand and small pebbles, with a rocky area in the middle that divides it into two sections. The waters are crystal clear and deep, and on the eastern side of the beach, caves provide natural shade. The beach is unorganized, with no snack bars, sunbeds, or restrooms, offering visitors a wild and untamed experience.
A local myth is associated with the beach, stating that a crocodile once owned by Cleopatra was brought to the area and turned to stone, forming the characteristic shape of one of the beach’s rocks.According to legend, Cleopatra, the legendary queen of Egypt, had a crocodile that she brought with her during her travels in the Mediterranean. When it reached Crete, the crocodile either broke free or escaped, and during its stay near the beach, it petrified, creating a rock with the characteristic shape of a crocodile.
The Trafoulas Gorge is a beautiful, narrow, and fairly steep path, about 2 kilometers long. Hiking it does not require specialized skills, but it is important to be prepared for the trek.
