Fragokastelo, known for its beautiful Venetian castle and the Drosoulites legend, is located in the southwest part of Crete, in the Sfakia region, about 75 km from Chania and 140 km from Heraklion. The settlement is nestled in a plain between the White Mountains and the Libyan Sea, making it a perfect spot for peaceful vacations. There are several accommodations, taverns, cafes, and mini markets in the area, catering to visitors’ needs.
The beaches in Fragokastelo are breathtaking, featuring crystal-clear turquoise waters and fine golden sand. The main beach lies directly in front of the famous Venetian Castle and is well-organized with amenities. To the east of the main beach is the stunning Orthi Ammos Beach, known for its impressive sand dunes. To the west lies Vatalos Beach, which offers a more tranquil experience, perfect for enjoying the sunset.
Apart from the beaches, the Kallikratis Plateau and Gorge nearby provide excellent hiking opportunities. Fragokastelo is also of great cultural and historical significance, thanks to its 14th-century Venetian castle, built to protect the region from pirate attacks. The castle is linked to the legend of the Drosoulites, the ghosts of warriors who, according to local lore, appear at dawn every May.
