About 20 km west of Heraklion and only 2 km east of Agia Pelagia lies the beautiful and serene Lygaria Beach. This peaceful destination, with its stunning natural scenery, is easily accessible by car or bus.
The bay of Lygaria, closed off and shielded from winds, offers a safe haven for relaxing swims in its turquoise waters. The beach is well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, public restrooms, parking, and accessible facilities for disabled visitors. Because of the rocky seabed, water shoes are recommended for a more comfortable swimming experience.
The area gets its name from the abundant native plant "ligaria" (willow tree). Besides the beach, there are traditional tavernas, cafes, and rental rooms, while a diving center offers lessons and excursions for adventure lovers.
Just beyond Lygaria, you will find Made Beach, and the nearby Monastery of Panagia Ligaria, dating back to 1610, adds a historical and religious touch to the area. Lygaria is also close to the lively Agia Pelagia, making it an ideal combination of tranquility and proximity to bustling activities.
During your visit, don’t miss out on soaking in the sun, enjoying water sports, savoring local dishes, and witnessing magical sunsets, while the surrounding area offers opportunities to explore charming villages and traditional settlements
