Minoan and Roman Mansions of Makris Gialos

Minoan and Roman Mansions of Makris Gialos

A Minoan and a Roman mansion have been found in the south-eastern coastal Makris Gialos settlement of the Lasithi prefecture. The Minoan mansion was found in Plakakia. It was built in 1400 B.C. and destroyed by a fire. It was used as a control centre of the trading of the area. It is like a small palace with a central yard, peripheral yards, a sanctuary, rooms and powerful external walls.

The Roman mansion from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.C. was found a few meters in the west, in Katovigli, where the today’s port of Makris Gialos is. Its area is about 1.5 acres.
