The Potamon Dam, located in the Amari Municipality of Rethymno, lies at the end of the stunning Patsos Gorge, nestled in a lush green valley. This artificial lake has evolved into one of the most important wetlands of the southeastern Mediterranean. It is about 25 km from the city of Rethymno and 95 km from Heraklion, making it a convenient destination from major points on the island.

The dam was completed in 2009 and has since played a crucial role in the region's water supply and irrigation systems, with plans for future hydroelectric energy production. The dam gained particular fame in 2014 when a crocodile, known as "Sifis," was discovered, becoming a local attraction before passing away in 2015. The dam continues to offer impressive landscapes for nature lovers and tourists who visit to admire its beauty and history.
