Agia Eirini

Agia Eirini

Just a few kilometers north of Heraklion, only 8 km from the city center, lies the picturesque area of Agia Irini, a green haven of peace, perfect for a quick escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The area is named after the charming chapel of Agia Irini, nestled among ancient trees by the river that runs through the area. Benches and tables are placed around the chapel, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty, with the scents and colors of nature prevailing. There's also a playground for children, making the location ideal for families.

Apart from the chapel, a significant attraction is the Agia Irini aqueduct. This impressive structure with its arches dates back to the Egyptian rule in Crete (1831-1841) and was used for water transportation, adding historical value to the region.

Agia Irini is also known for the Knosano Gorge, which passes through the area. The gorge starts from Archanes and ends near Knossos, offering an excellent option for hiking through breathtaking natural landscapes.

To reach Agia Irini, visitors can follow the road connecting Knossos to Archanes. The settlement is built on a hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding area, while its easy access from Heraklion makes it a perfect destination for day trips or short getaways into nature.
