Historical Museum of Heraklion

The Historical Museum of Heraclion is in the coastal road, on the 27th of Sofoklis Venizelos Street. The Historical Museum of Heraclion was founded by the Society of the Cretan Historical Studies in 1953 and is in the Neoclassical building that was given by the A. & M. Kalokairinos Institutions.

There are permanent exhibits in the museum that concern the ceramics and sculptural collections from the First Byzantine Period, a numismatic collection, a Byzantine and Post-Byzantine collection (paintings by El Greco are the main exhibits of the era), objects from the Ottoman and modern period, audio and visual documents of the World War II, an Ethnographic collection and rooms dedicated to the famous Cretan writer, Nikos Kazantzakis.

There are also periodical exhibitions in the museum.
