The Museum of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, also known as the El Greco Museum, is located in Fodele, the birthplace of the famous Cretan painter. The museum is housed in a traditional building that is believed to have been Theotokopoulos' home, as he himself mentioned in 1606. Founded in 1998, the museum exhibits replicas of the artist’s most important works, while also offering information about his family and artistic space (atelier). Visitors can explore details about Theotokopoulos’ life in Crete before he traveled to Venice to study at the School of Titian.

This fascinating space also presents information about the return of Spanish professors in 1934, who visited Fodele to honor the artist. Additionally, the museum hosts exhibits featuring El Greco’s painting room, family archives, and photographic material from the unveiling of his bust in 1964.

The museum’s location is particularly picturesque, featuring an outdoor seating area among orange trees and a Byzantine church, while nearby you’ll find traditional taverns and cafés. The entrance fee is symbolic, only 2.50 euros, and the museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer season.
