Agiofarago is one of the most impressive beaches in the Heraclion prefecture due to its imposing rocks that surround it, the pebbly coast and its crystal, emerald water. Agiofarago is about 80 kilometers from Heraclion.
The beach is not organized so those who want to visit it should be appropriately prepared.
There is a well next to the small church of Agios Antonios, in the gorge, about 5 minutes from the beach, from where you can drink water, if you want.
The beach is ideal for camping, while there are many safe climbing spots in the gorge.
GORGE
The Agiofarago gorge is in the south of Matala and in the west of Kaloi Limenes. Imposing rocks and caves surround the gorge and you can also visit the small church of Agios Antonios where there is a well with drinking water.
The route is easy even for those who do not have experience and lasts about 60 minutes.
The gorge starts a few meters after the Odigitria monastery.
PLACE NAME
The name of Agiofarago comes from the many hermits that asketed in the area. It is said that 300 hermits lived there and that they met once a year in order to be counted and see how many have been dead.
